In the mountains of Northern Thailand, agroforestry

Kenneth Rimdahl is a passionate tea entrepreneur who has built his career around preserving biodiversity.

Founder of Monsoon Tea Company, he supports local communities in northern Thailand in the rehabilitation and development of agroforestry tea cultivation.

I discovered the work of Monsoon Tea thanks to Dave Oger, their ambassador for France. This was an opportunity to learn about the Forest Friendly Tea project, which is based on the rehabilitation of forest areas for tea cultivation, where planted tea trees are mixed with abandoned tea trees that are several hundred years old, and some even wild, through tastings with him and William from Monsoon Tea at our workshop. It was also an opportunity to eat miang (or hmiang) freshly brought by William straight from the province of Chiang Mai, and to discover an innovative process developed by Kenneth to dehydrate miang so that it can be transported and stored for months, even years, at room temperature!

The Monsoon Tea Company adventure began in 2012, founded by Kenneth Rimdahl and Vorakarn Wongfu (Aek) in Chiang Mai. It has established itself as one of the pioneering sustainable tea companies in Southeast Asia thanks to its unique “Forest Friendly Tea” model. Rather than planting tea in monoculture, the brand works exclusively with native tea trees growing in living forests, thus preserving biodiversity, soils, and local ecosystems. Through close collaboration with local communities, the creation of a biodiversity scale (Rimdahl Scale), and significant international awareness-raising efforts, Monsoon Tea is helping to transform the industry towards more regenerative practices, while demonstrating that agroforestry tea can be sustainable, traceable, and economically viable.
