From its Latin name Mentha piperita , it owes its name to its extreme minty freshness, almost peppery, due to the high concentration of menthol in its leaves. It is known to keep you alert, aid digestion and has an antispasmodic action. It is very different in taste from spearmint. If we draw a parallel with the world of chewing gum in terms of its sensation in the mouth, peppermint is the equivalent of glacial mint, while spearmint is that of chlorophyll mint!
